Ghosts

Did we take the long way
just so you could see that nameless faceless building?
I don't get it
You said that it gives you the creeps
I'll brush some snowflakes off your hair
while you're distracted documenting
We've got all the time in the world
At least until the ghosts come out
They'll chase us, but we'll escape
We'll show each one its weight
Did we take the long way
just to etch this echo one wave stronger?
Place each footprint in its shadow?
Trace a scar with my red pen?
While you're distracted documenting
the place we lived six years ago
I'm setting jewels inside my memory
You get me
Let me set us

Neon Skeleton Key Lamps

A meteor breaking up
and I can't stop holding onto my cuffs
with the tips of my fingers while I mark time
I count it's the only way I know how
Reentry sealing me up (shoulders up)
My heavy sighs they're a puff
Steady looks
Trip on a curb, soak a glove
Catch my own fall
It's the only way I know how
I'm guarded
I'm guarded by the stars and not the streetlights
I'm guided by reflections off the brick walls
Red neon skeleton key lamps
Flip heads for a Heartland
Flip tails to go home
Still feel guilty that I gave myself a chance
Drunk attached a cloudy frame to every frosty lamppost
Swinging lights aren't blowing down
I'm exhausted plausible embossed
like pouring ice and welling up unwound
It's the only way that I know how

Been living under frozen sky
But we've all got ways that we get by
You changed your name
The one you had, it didn't fit right
And I know you'd dream of something else
if you could sleep nights
I know
So tonight I'll stay here with you
There's nothing else I'd rather do
We'll look for reasons for why we're here
We'll blame the season for this fear
I'll say that everything'll work out
like I know what I'm talking about
but all this snow keeps piling up
We dig, it's never deep enough
Just need a change in atmosphere
It's like winter's earlier each year
Sidewalks across this town are icing up, we're sliding down
Look for a place to drown, find a bar a block away
You're just a kid, bruising up
If I could tell you
how many times you gotta fall
before you break through
I would
Cold drinks and snowfalls
I'll pick up your phone calls
I get too wrapped up in my own shit
We order one more round and sit
And I know when you're living under sheets of snow
it can look like the world's gone black
but remember that the sun comes back
at least they say it does
