Back Home 03:08
Home, where are you now? Is it a given that home is where you hang your hat? And when the ones you've always considered to be resolute aren't now, then where does that leave you? Do you remember your very first winter? Do you remember the first place that you called home? It's snowing like you haven't seen in years, and you can't even see the streets below. The seventeenth floor: can you imagine a scene more perfect? It's snowing like it hasn't snowed in years, and you don't even think you'll make it home. The seventeeth floor. Shiver now. Shiver until the morning. Oh, how well prepared! Hung the lights and then up you stare. Maybe bring back a feeling. Maybe cash out a memory. And sure, there are some things you've grown to love. But it's the friends, it's still your friends you miss back home.

Everybody's going home. On the Ryan before it jams up soon. Don't be late, everybody's waiting. It'd be a shame if you were to miss it. I can hear laughing in the background. Everything but the sound of your voice. You say, "Dad's chopped wood. It's already burning." I'll hit the road when the time is right. I've already called to say I'm running late. Just to remind them that I'm on my way. I take one step, and the T.V.'s on. The lights are off except for one. I take one step and I say: Hello, hello! I'm home, I'm home!
3.
Found me again searching the city, looking around. There can only be so many wrong ways. There can only be so many places. I found all the tallest trees uptown. I found all the brightest lights, they're here. I've got something I can't hold any longer. That maybe I'm home. I'm done with ambivalence and passivity. Can you hear me? I may be layered up with every sweater I've owned, but I still can't hide it. Can you see the way it's freezing me? Can you see the way it's frozen me? I've got something I can't hold onto. I'm so sorry, it's too cold. It's too cold. Maybe I'm home.

about

Volume 9 was written and recorded half in New York and half in Chicago this year. Tracks were volleyed back and forth, leading to a few frantic days of mixing before Christmas day. Very many thanks to all the friends who helped inspire this year's record, and for all who listen.
