lyrics

When I was a kid
I set up the tracks
for my model train
around the Christmas tree.
And we'd make some room
for all the presents
that would appear
beside it the next day.
I think one year I got a bike.
One year I got some Game Boy games.
The year I got a toy guitar
and microphone
I stayed inside all day.

Listening
for reindeer hooves
on our rooftop.

The lights we hung
on the tree would sing their little carols.

When I was a kid
I'd sit on the ledge
at the bay window
look out at the backyard.
The blankets of snow
reflected in floodlights
contrast with the darkness:
a midwest winter's night.

We don't own that house no more
at 31535,
but if I could I'd want to see it.
I'd see it one last time.

There was a waxing and waning of the mountain of snow in the cul-de-sac at the end of our street. The snowplows would push all the snow into one place, our place, where we would dig our tunnels, where we'd slide down that tiny hill. We'd wrap ourselves up in puffy overcoats and snowpants, boots and mittens, hats and scarves, bring our shovels and our sleds. And when we were too cold go forward, we'd shuffle back to the house. Our little red noses would turn back to normal with the rising steam of the mugs of hot chocolate we held.
